Smart plans new 5-door model for US, releases sketches

Daimler-owned Smart has announced that it plans to launch a 5-door hatchback specifically for the US market, sometime in the fourth quarter of next year. The B-Segment vehicle will be based on a Nissan model since Daimler and Renault-Nissan have formed an alliance recently.

“We are faced with continuing customer demand for a smart car with more seating capacity. Sales and service of the five seater will be carried out exclusively by our approximately 75 smart dealerships in the United States,” said Roger Penske, Chairman of the Penske Automotive Group. Penske is the official dealer of Smart in the US.

“Together with Nissan, we will bring to market a fully equipped small car for our customers and dealers in the USA. It will fit in well with the smart brand,” he added. Along with the announcement Smart also released two design sketches of the new 5-door fuel-efficient model. Something tells us that the new Smart model will be a remodeled Nissan Micra or March.

Smart reveals all-electric 5hp escooter concept

Smart has unwrapped the escooter concept ahead of it’s debut at the Paris Motor Show. The all-electric scooter is powered by a small 4kW/5hp electric wheel hub which is linked to a 48-volt lithium-ion battery pack. With a 45km/h top speed the escooter can deliver up to 100 kilometers in terms of range, over a full charge.

This mini electromobile features a steel and aluminium frame with plastic bodypanels. It comes with features like illuminated side markers, headlight and taillight with LED technology, additional storage space and ABS. There is also an airbag and a Blind Spot Assist function.

Interestingly, the escooter uses an iPhone as an instrument display. When the rider mounts the phone in between the handlebars, the scooter’s immobiliser and anti-theft protection are deactivated. Online services can be accessed when making stops. While riding, the iPhone will serve as the instrument panel.

This means that it displays the speedometer, range and battery charge level. The smartphone also acts as a navigation system too. The Smart escooter concept can be fully recharged in three to five hours via a household power outlet. Check out an image gallery after the jump.
