Porsche teases 918 Spyder with 1:3 scale model

Does the clay model pictured above look familiar? You guessed it right! It is actually a 1:3 scale model of the 918 Spyder which was shown as a concept at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. Compared to the concept, this clay model which points to the already-confirmed-for-production model shows us a single side exhaust, instead of two. You can also notice that there is no gap between the door and the rear fender. However the overall design has been retained.

As mentioned earlier, the concept 918 Spyder received very good response and past reports suggested that at least 900 bookings have been made. The production 918 Spyder is likely to be made in limited numbers and is expected to retain its hybrid powertrain. The powertrain is made up by a 500 PS 3.4 liter V8 and two electric motors. Total power, at least in the concept is 718 PS. Some also said that total power for the production could be increased with the use of a third electric motor.

Previous rumors also suggest that the production model will carry a 500,476 Euro price tag, estimated. The above teaser was released as part of a press release that centers around Porsche’s €150 million investment in its research and development centre in Weissach, Germany. The investment will be mostly used for upgrading purposes and the addition of a high-tech wind tunnel and a new design centre.

LA 2010 – Porsche Cayman R with 330hp shown

Porsche arrived at the 2010 Los Angeles Motor Show with a new, more powerful version of the Cayman mid-engined sports car. Called the Cayman R, it is powered by the same engine that is used in the Cayman S. Which means it’s the 3.4 liter boxer engine. However the ‘R’ designation marks a 10hp bump in horsepower, bringing total output to 330hp.

The Cayman R weighs 1,295 kilograms which is 55 kilograms less the Cayman S. With a standard 6-speed manual transmission, the more potent Cayman can hit the 100km/h mark in 5.0 seconds flat (4.9 seconds with optional 7-speed PDK or 4.7 seconds with optional Sport Chrono Packages).

Top speed is figured at 282km/h (280km/h with PDK). The Porsche Cayman R will go on sale in February next year with a starting price of €69,830 in Germany, including VAT. Continue reading to view more high-res images and a promo footage.

Porsche confirms a debut at the LA Motor Show

Porsche has revealed that it will carry out a world premiere of a mid-engined sports car at the LA Motor Show happening next week. However we have no idea what will be reveled, whether it’s a concept, a new variant of an existing model or a completely new model.

It could also be the much-talked-about production version of the 918 Spyder that has been confirmed for production recently. The newly-unveiled Porsche 408hp 911 Carrera GTS and the 911 Speedster models will also share the stage and enjoy their respective US debuts. Porsche 911 Speedster to grace Paris Motor Show!

Porsche has released initial details and images of the limited edition 911 Speedster ahead of it’s debut at the Paris Motor Show. This Speedster can be differentiated with the regular 911 with it’s 60mm lower ride height, a more raked front windscreen, a flat contour hood as well as the distinctive double-bubble hardcover for the soft top.

The Speedster which is limited to a 356 production run (the number pays homage to the 356 Speedster of the 1950′s) features a rear end that is 44mm wider, just like the Carrera GTS. Power comes from a 3.8 liter flat six with 408hp and 420Nm of torque which is 23hp more than the Carrera S, same as the Carrera GTS as well.

Other goodies include a rear axle with a differential lock, PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management), PCCB (Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes) and a 7-speed dual-clutch PDK transmission which helps this new 911 model to hit the 100km/h mark in 4.6 seconds.

Porsche unleashes the 408hp 911 Carrera GTS!

Porsche will be heading to this month’s Paris Motor Show with a new 911 variant. Called the 911 Carrera GTS, it uses the 3.8 liter engine found in the Carrera and gives out 408hp, which is 23hp more than the S. The engine is treated to a special resonance intake manifold and six vacuum-controlled tuning flaps, compared to just one flap in S.

The modified engine also makes 420Nm which is peaks at 4,200 RPM, 200 RPM earlier compared the S. A sports exhaust system with two dual tailpipes is also included with the GTS. It comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission while a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox is available as an option.

The Carrera GTS also gets the Carrera 4 body which is 44 millimeters wider and naturally gives it a wider track. In terms of design, the GTS has a black SportDesign front apron with spoiler edge and black sides skirts. There are also Carrera GTS logos on the doors and rear boot lid, finished in either black or silver depending on the body colour.

The GTS rides on 19-inch centre-mounted black RS Spyder wheels while it’s interior sports black Alcantara, evident on the centre sections of the driver and passenger seats. Porsche also said that the interior features high-quality materials wherever the driver and passenger can have access to, such as on the SportDesign steering wheel and on the gear as well as handbrake levers.

The GTS treatment is available on both the Carrera Coupe and Cabriolets models. The former goes for 104,935 Euro while the latter carries a 115,050 Euro price tag in Germany. Both models are slated to go on sale in their home country from December 2010.
