World’s first diesel-fueled hybrid: Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4

This Peugeot 3008 is no ordinary crossover. Its the hybrid variant which is fueled by diesel, making it the world’s first ever production diesel hybrid. The arrangement of the drivetrain is similar to more conventional petrol hybrids which means that the combustion engine which is diesel in this case is mated to an electric motor.
The former drives the front wheels while the electric motor runs the rear wheels. The diesel unit is a 2.0 liter force-inducted engine which produces 163hp while the electric motor makes 27hp continuously with 37hp being the maximum power output. Combining both the systems gives you 200hp and 500Nm of torque. Peugeot says that the torque is split between the front and rear axles, with 300Nm and 200Nm respectively.

The engine which also features an engine start/stop system is linked to an electronically-controlled 6-speed sequential transmission. Also in the list is an energy regeneration system and a Nickel Metal Hydride battery pack, located underneath the boot floor.
The driver would be able to choose different driving modes via a dial mounted on the centre console. First up is AUTO which automatically selects between the diesel engine and the electric motor with maximum economy as the goal. ZEV is for electric-only driving with a maximum driving range of about 4.5 kilometers while in 4WD mode, both the engine and the motor work together as much as possible. Finally with SPORT mode, the vehicle uses both systems to offer all 200 horses.

The company claims that the 3008 HYbrid4 offers a fuel consumption figure that is 30% lower compared to a petrol equivalent. Combined fuel economy is figured at 3.8 liters per 100 kilometers while 99 grams of CO2 per kilometer is the emissions output figure. In terms of performance, the fuel-efficient crossover does naught to 100km/h in 8.8 seconds (with 120 kilograms of additional weight) and top speed is set at 209km/h.
Styling wise the hybrid vehicle differs from it’s more conventional counterpart in form of a two-tone rear spoiler with a high-gloss section. There are also LED daytime running lights integrated into the headlights. This vehicle also has a 7-inch colour display screen indicating the energy flow between the engine and the electric motor.

The Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4 will be manufactured at the Sochaux and Mulhouse factories in France. Sales for the European market are expected to begin by spring next year. The diesel hybrid drivetrain is also expected to make it’s way into the Peugeot 508 HYbrid, expected to be revealed next year.

Peugeot 508: Official images and details released!

Just hours after some leaked images of the all-new 508 made their onto the Internet, Peugeot has officially revealed the mid-sized sedan. The vehicle which is based on the PSA Group’s platform 3 carries Peugeot’s new design language which, according to the company, evolved from the design employed on the SR1 Concept car. Nevertheless the final product draws it’s overall looks from the 5 by Peugeot concept shown in Geneva. Although I am a little iffy about the design of the headlights, the 508 does seem to have a pretty good looking interior. It looks simple yet classy to me.
The 508 which goes on to replace the outgoing the 407 will be offered with a range of engines but the company did not mention the specifications in it’s press release. However it did say that all engines will benefit from Peugeot’s new e-HDi stop and start system. The company claims that the system can help improve fuel economy by up to 15%.

Peugeot also confirmed that the 508 will have a hybrid in it’s line-up. The HYbrid4 variant will be able to produce 200hp and it will come with an all-wheel-drive configuration. In full electric mode the greener 508 can output as low as 99 grams of emissions per kilometer.
As revealed in the leaked images, the 508 will be available in two body styles including a sedan measuring 4.79 meters long as well as a wagon or SW measuring 4.81 meters long. Both variants will make their world debut at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, before sales commence in 2011. The new mid-sized sedan will be manufactured in France and in China.

Peugeot 508 sedan and wagon: Leaked images!

This is the Peugeot 508 sedan which will go on to replace the outgoing 407. No less than five images of the new vehicle including the wagon version have been leaked prematurely before it’s official unveiling, which should take place at this year’s Paris Motor Show in October.
The 508′s exterior design is inspired by the 5 by Peugeot concept shown in Geneva but somehow I feel that the headlights look a little too slim, but I should keep my final opinion at least until I see the car in the flesh. The wagon variant or SW as Peugeot would call it seems to have a sweet rear end.
The mid-sized sedan is also expected to offer features such as an engine start/stop function. Furthermore a hybrid variant is expected to join the line up as well. Engine wise it is expected to be powered by a force-inducted 1.6 liter unit also used by Citroen and MINI and a 160hp 2.0 liter. More powerful options should be made available as well.
While we wait for the official launch and juicier details, feast on some images after the jump. Read the rest of this entry.

Mitsubishi wraps up deal to supply 100,000 i-MiEVs to PSA Peugeot Citroën

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has announced the signing of a “Final Cooperative Agreement” with PSA Peugeot Citroën on the supply of its i-MiEV electric car to the French brands. The deal will see the Japanese company supply 100,000 units of the i-MiEV to PSA, which will rebadge the car and market it as the Citroen C-Zero and Peugeot iOn. Both cars will be launched in Europe, starting in France, by the end of 2010.
The i-MiEV EV, which is based on Mitsubishi’s i city car, is powered by 88 lithium ion cells connected in a series. Its permanent magnet synchronous motor makes 47 kW or 64 PS and 180 Nm of torque from zero to 2000 rpm. Cruising range is 160 km in the Japanese 10-15 mode. A full charge from a 200V outlet will take about seven hours.
This news comes in the wake of failed discussions for capital alliance between both companies in the style of Renault and Nissan. PSA chief Philippe Varin confirmed that at the Geneva show but also said that both parties will continue talking about expanding business ties – and this is one example of a good tie up. PSA also markets the Mitsubishi Outlander SUV under Peugeot and Citroen brands.
