Chevrolet Beat launched in India ahead of Delhi Motor Show

General Motors has officially launched the Beat compact car in India ahead of the Delhi Motor Show. The Beat which has not been launched in Europe or in North America was also a familiar character in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, in concept form that is. The Indian market model gets a 1.2 liter S-TEC II DOHC powerplant that is good for 79hp and 108Nm of torque. The engine can also deliver 18.6 kilometers with a liter of fuel.

The engine also features something called PDA (Port De-Activation) that ensures high exhaust gas recirculation for combustion stability at low speeds, improved fuel efficiency as well as reduced emissions. It is paired with a 5-speed manual while an automatic transmission and a diesel-fueled engine is coming soon.

The range topping LT trim level comes standard with features such as climate control, integrated audio with USB and AUX-in, steering column mounted LED back-lit speedo and LCD digital rev counter and roof rails while buyers will have to part with more money to get two airbags, ABS and EBD.

General Motors claims that the Beat’s body is the stiffest and toughest in its class and as it has 66.5% high-strength steel and more than 16% ultra-high-strength steel. Three trim levels are available including the base PS, LS and the above mentioned LT. Prices range between Rs 3.34 lakh for the PS and Rs 3.94 lakh for the LT.

General Motors is definitely making its mark in India even after the global recession hit their US operation. General Motors India with its brand “Chevrolet” has launch two cars in quick succession; Chevrolet Cruze and Chevrolet Beat. I wish them all the very best for 2010.
