Williams interested to get Petronas on board?

If rumors are anything to go by, then Williams is interested to have Malaysian-based oil and gas company, Petronas on board as a sponsor. Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport revealed that Williams’ recent objection against allowing the Qadbak-backed Sauber Formula 1 team to be part of the 2010 grid is actually about the money. The team’s reason was that 28 cars would be too many and not much is known about the Qadbak company.
According to the Auto Motor und Sport website, Petronas which has been sponsoring Sauber for years now is interested to stay in the sport and it prefers to stay with Sauber compared to sponsoring Team Lotus, which is also Malaysian-based. Should the Sauber team fail to join the grid next year, Williams would be the first to meet officials from Petronas. Rumor also has it that Williams’ financial position isn’t strong at the moment. Furthermore the team will lose Royal Bank of Scotland’s (RBS) US$20 million sponsorship by end of the year.
