Audi reveals the A5 / S5 Cabriolet

German based auto manufacturer; Audi has revealed the top-less variant for its A5 and S5 2-door coupe. Carrying over looks from its hard top model, the A5 Cabriolet features daytime running lights, side mirror indicators and tail lights with LED technology. The sporty looking cabriolet sits on the ground with 17-inch wheels.

With a choice of 15 body colours to choose from, the convertible fabric can be finished in four different colours including Blue, Brown, Red and Black. The convertible top which features a flat glass rear window and an LED light for the rear seat, takes 15 seconds to be opened and 17 seconds to be closed and it can be operated at speeds of up to 50 km/h.

With the top down, the A5 Cabriolet offers a total of 320 liters of trunk space, taking away only 60 liters. The trunk space can be increased by tilting down the rear seat backs via a 50:50 split, that help gives the A5 a total trunk space of 750 liters.

With a 2.65 meter-long wheelbase, the 4-seater features a typical Audi interior, equipped with the latest version of the MMI user-interface system and can be fitted with a number of options including sport seats with expendable thigh rests and electric lumbar support as well as all-electric adjustment and heating, including heating for the back seats.

A total of five engine options are available for A5 Cabriolet including; a 180HP with 320Nm of torque 4 cylinder 2.0 TFSI (with multitronic transmission), a 211HP with 350Nm of torque version of the same 2.0 TFSI (with multitronic or a 6 speed manual transmission for standard and 7 speed S-Tronic for Quattro model) and a range topping 3.2 V6 FSI (multitronic transmission for standard or 7 speed S-Tronic for the Quattro model) power plant with Audi’s valvelift system (AVS) which is capable of 265HP and 330Nm of torque.

All these petrol engines feature direct injection and are able to deliver 31.79, 34.59 and 27.35 miles to gallon respectively (US calculation).

Diesel options include an entry level 170HP 4 cylinder 2.0 TDI (with 6 speed manual transmission), a 190HP with 400Nm of torque 2.7 V6 TDI (with 6 speed manual transmission ) and a 240HP with 500Nm of torque 3.0 TDI V6. (with S-Tronic transmission and an all wheel drive setup). All three diesel options are able to deliver 42, 37.94, 34.59 miles to the gallon.

Cars with the 6 speed manual, with petrol or diesel engines, are fitted with Audi’s engine start stop system which shuts down the engine if the car comes to a standstill, with its gear in neutral position. All A5 Cabriolets also come fitted will the energy recovery system. The alternator increases its secondary voltage during the coasting and braking phases. It is then able to convert the kinetic energy into electrical energy that is stored in the battery. When the convertible accelerates again, the battery feeds the energy back in, thus reducing the load on the alternator.

Along with two S Line upgrade packages made available which offers a number of upgrades including a lowered body, 18 inch wheels, redesigned bumpers and so on, Audi also revealed the range topping S5 Cabriolet. This high performance variant features a 3.0 liter supercharged V6 that is able to produce 333HP and 440Nm of torque.

It sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and accelerates up to a governed top speed of 250 km/h. Consumption wise, it returns 24.5 miles to the gallon. The power plant is mated the 7 speed S-Tronic and the Quattro all wheel drive system. 18-inch cast aluminum wheels come as standard.
