Volkswagen and Toshiba to develop new electric drive technology?

Volkswagen and Toshiba have signed a letter of intent yesterday for a new partnership into the research and development of electric drive units and their power sources for the Volkswagen’s small-family vehicle range.
The partnership also consists of ‘developing battery systems with a high specific unit’ for the new wave of electric cars. Toshibas’ foray into the car market will be beneficial for both companies as it will supersede the first wave of electric designs that other companies have done out of necessity in the current climate. Recently, Honda and Yuasa has also signed an agreement.
According to VW’s Head, Prof. Dr Martin Winterkorn “Volkswagen is forging ahead with the development of future drive technologies in many different areas. In order to further strengthen our position, Volkswagen is investing in the long term and is offering cooperation projects to other companies. One of the important components in this context is the cooperation with Toshiba. I am convinced that this will be a major step forward towards the development of series production electric vehicles for our customers.”
It will be exciting to see what this partnership will produce with hopes of more efficient emission free vehicles.
