New Mercedes Benz E-Class launched at Detroit 09 – Full Details & Photo Gallery!

After a series of spy spots and a leaked brochure, the Mercedes Benz E-Class W212 was officially unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show. The new E-Class features a more rigid body shell (by up to 30%) and features at least 20 new or further technical developments. Just like what we have reported earlier, the new E-Class comes with a variety of petrol and diesel options, and that the Kompressor engines have been discontinued and replaced with turbocharged units with direct injection.

Diesel Engines.
The new E-Class which features a drag coefficient of 0.25 is fitted with a number of 2.1 liter four cylinder diesel engine versions including a 204HP unit with 500Nm of torque (impressive!) which powers the E250 CDI, a 170HP for the E220 CDI and a 136HP for the E200 CDI model. All three four cylinder diesels feature the latest generation common rail direct injection, fast piezo-electric injectors and twin turbochargers. All three also consume 5.3 liters for every 100 kilometers traveled while producing only 139 grams of CO2 per kilometer. V6 diesels includes a 231HP for the E350 CDI and a 211HP unit for the E350 BlueTEC.

Petrol Engines.
Two four cylinder options with direct injection, variable intake and exhaust system, and turbocharging are available, both with 1.8 liter displacements. A 184HP is fitted in the E200 CGI (with ECO Start/Stop feature) and a 205HP for the E250 CGI. Both engines consume 6.8 liters and 7.4 liters of fuel for every 100 kilometers traveled. A 292HP V6 powers the E350 CGI and a V8 for the top of the line E500 which kicks out 388HP. The E63 AMG high performance model features a 525HP V8 power plant.
Drivetrains.
All models are of course rear wheel drive, however buyers for E350 CDI, E350 CGI, and E500 can opt to fit the 4Matic all wheel drive system. Transmission wise, a 6 speed manual or 5 speed automatic is offered but V6 and V8 models feature a 7 speed automatic tranny which comes standard with a steering wheel selector lever.
Exterior.
Buyers can choose between twelve body colours and also twelve wheel and tire combination (up to 19 inch). As standard, 16 inch light alloys are offered. The ELEGANCE trim features chrome plated radiator grille with four silver painted louvers and ten twin-spoke wheel design. AVANTGARDE on the other hand comes with Bi-Xenon head lamps with day time LED running lights, LED tail lights, 17 inch wheels in five twin-spoke design and chrome plated radiator grille with three glossy black louvers.
The bumper design of this model is a little different as well. Mercedes Benz has also made available the AMG Sports Package which include AMG bumpers and skirts, lowered suspension, perforated disc brakes and 18 inch wheels.

Interior.
Six upholstery materials with five colour combination is available with high-gloss exotic wood, open-pored wood and aluminium interior trim choices. The steering wheel features a four spoke design with multi-function. Entertainment is provided by the AUDIO 20 CD system with a twin receiver, CD-player, eight loudspeakers and a Bluetooth interface for mobile phones. The ELEGANCE package includes burr walnut trim and stylish ambient lighting with fiber optics that frame the dashboard and door panels. The AVANTGARDE features ambient lighting and the instrument cluster in a sporty tubular design.
The AMG Sports Package includes a three spoke steering wheel with shift paddles and a black head liner for the interior. Another interior package available is the the Exclusive package. This offers a leather steering wheel with wood, Alcantara roof lining, pillar claddings and sun visors, Nappa seat upholstery, armrest and door panels and an attractively lined dashboard with decorative seams and velour floor mats.
Other Standard Features.
The E-Class which is also fitted with seven air bags comes with the ATTENTION ASSIST system with Drowsiness Detection which can detect if the driver is not focused or drowsy via sensors that monitor 70 parameters of the driver such as steering correction and so on. The new E-Class also features adaptive shock absorbers which automatically adapts to road conditions by changing damping forces. For the AVANTGARDE trim level, this comes with a lowered suspension (optional for other variants).

Other Optional Features.
Other optional accessories include; Light & Sight Package which offers adaptive main beam assist, Bi-Xenon headlights, Intelligent Light System and LED day time running lights, Lane Safety Package with Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist features and Brake Assist PLUS which help warn drivers if something sudden happens ahead within 30 meters such as a car suddenly moving into the driver’s lane. This system can also perform emergency braking if it does not get a response in time from the driver.
Also optional is the air suspension system for the V6 powered models (standard with E500) which significantly improves ride comfort, a rear seat comfort package that includes seat heating and a THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control system which offers three zone settings (instead of just two as standard) for driver, front passenger and rear passengers with different “climatisation modes” which adapt air volume and distribution to their personal preferences without sacrificing the convenience of automatic mode.
A Speed Limit Assist which displays speed limits on the instrument panel while driving and a Night View Assist which is available on the S-Class make up the rest of the available options for the new E-Class.
