New lightweight lithium-ion battery for Porsche’s 911 GT3, 911 GT3 RS and Boxster Spyder

Porsche has announced a new lightweight battery option that will be available in January 2010 for the 911 GT3, 911 GT3 RS and Boxster Spyder models. The automaker claims that this battery option weighs less than 6 kg which is about 10 kg lighter than a conventional 60 Ah lead battery. It has the same length and width as the conventional battery but is 2.8 inches shorter. Porsche stressed that a normal battery would only use 30% of the total capacity while the lithium-ion version uses 100% of its capacity, meaning the lithium-ion’s 18 Ah capacity is sufficient for normal use.
The lithium-ion battery can also be recharged by the alternator more quickly thanks to smaller internal resistance and it also allows for a greater amount of charge/discharge cycles, and a reduced self-discharge effect, hence prolonging battery life. There is a catch though. The battery can only operate in temperatures above 0 degrees Celcius, so you will have revert back to the conventional lead battery that will still be included in the sale. You will have to swap the batteries on your own. It will be an option that will cost 1,904 Euros. It will also be available for retrofitting on the above mentioned three models from February 2010 for a hefty 2,499 Euros.
