Its official: Jenson Button joins McLaren!

Just two days after the announcement of the new Mercedes GP team, Jenson Button has been officially declared as a McLaren driver. The newly crowned World Champion has signed a multi-year contract with the Woking-based team, although the length of the contract was not revealed. Button will race alongside 2008 World Champion Lewis Hamilton. The last time two World Champions raced for the same team at the same time was back in 1968 when Graham Hill and Jim Clark raced for Lotus.

Button started his Formula 1 career in 2000 with the Williams team and it took him nine years to become World Champion. He achieved this with the Brawn GP team that made history when it won both titles in its maiden year. After doing so, Mercedes which supplied engines to the team this year, made a deal and has taken over the team, turning it into Mercedes GP while retaining Ross Brawn as team principal.

“It’s always a difficult decision to leave a team when you’ve been there for so long. But life is all about challenges – and, most important of all, it’s about challenging yourself. So, although I won the World Championship with Brawn GP last year, and I’ll never forget that, I was always adamant that I wanted to continue to set myself fresh challenges,” commented Button.
