Lotus F1 signs first driver: Kamui Kobayashi perhaps?

Lotus F1’s team principal Tony Fernandes has announced on his twitter account that the Malaysian squad has signed its first driver, but was tight lipped about the identity of the driver. “One Malaysia formula one team aka lotus has signed it’s first driver. Public announcement soon. The dream continues,” were his exact words.

Malaysia’s Fairuz Fauzy has been linked with the team ever since it was given the green light to race in 2010 but the team’s technical chief Mike Gascoyne recently revealed the Fauzy will serve as a reserve or third driver first. Former Toyota driver Jarno Trulli was also rumored to join the team although there is no substantial information to back this up. Recently another driver was linked to the team: Kamui Kobayashi.

The Japanese driver who took the Formula 1 fraternity by storm with his excellent drives in the final two races of the 2009 season when he replaced injured Timo Glock in Toyota recently revealed that if he had to choose a team (now that Toyota has withdrawn from the sport), he would go for Lotus. So, if you ask me to make an educated guess, I would say that this mystery driver is Kobayashi. The team is expected to make an official announcement soon, stay tuned!
